Our dog had 4 puppies and was nursing them fine for the first week. Then this dog's mother is trying to take the puppies away and nurse them! I don't think she has any milk and she even killed one of the pups! We keep trying to separate them but that hasn't worked so far.
Why would a dog try to take away another's pups?

Because it is a motherly thing and yes when they do that they are probaly produce milk already. It is fine as long as the puppies are being fed. I had two pitts that did the same thing. So it's cool.

I've had cats share litters several times, no problems. As for dogs, the only time I had 2 litters at the same time (4 days apart), since it was a mother-daughter duo that had never had a problem in their lives, I put them in separate whelping pens, but in the same room. Kept a close eye on them. They were fine on day 1. Day 2, the mother decided that ALL the pups were hers and she and her daughter had a nasty fight, the only fight they had in their lives. So I learned my lesson and kept them separate for about 3 weeks. Once the babies were toddling about, both mothers relaxed and both took care of all the pups (but were still locked up separately when I wasn't there to keep an eye on things). As for males--no, no, no. The mother dog does NOT want the males around until the pups are at least 4 weeks old (or older). Whether the males would kill the puppies (either deliberately, or accidentally due to being too rough) is a moot point: mama dog's instincts will tell her to keep the male out of her den. Some females have been known to really stress out if the male was around her babies, and kill the pups herself.... Mother and pups should have a room where they feel safe and secure. If you look at wolf society, the mother dens with the cubs and doesn't bring them out until at least 3 weeks of age (when they start toddling to the entrance on their own). The male wolves are excited to see the babies, but NEVER enter the den. You couldn't ask for a better dad than a male wolf, but the females still draw that line....

In the wild only the alpha female of a pack will have puppies. This is a survival of the fittest instinct. If a ***** is weak then her pups could be weak and bring down the pack. If another ***** has puppies the alpha will either kill all the puppies or take over the rearing of the pups or a combination as in your case. Your older dog must be kept away from the new mom and her pups.

Some critters just want to be moms. When I was young I worked on a ranch. The owner had several dogs and cats. I have seen a dog nursing other dogs pups and kittens the cats had!

its better if they live with their real mother only.the other dog may be attached with the pups but dont let her take them coz theres no benefit in it but try to keep her away from pups as they r much more secured n healthy with their own mother.
generally this happens when a dog loses it puppies n then thinks that its her' whenever she see pups though for a short period when she is depressed n missing her pups.
gud luck take care

You must seperate the pups and their mother from any other dogs until the pups are older and can get around better.
Dogs will kill each other puppies. They will also try and care for the others pups and it can make the two females fight.
You MUST seperate these dogs.

It could just be a maternal thing, she's probably missing having pups. I know my dog trys to groom my bunny like she was one of her pups (she had pups last year) just try your best to seperate them, if you must keep the puppies in a cage big enough for them and mama, just make sure mama gets plenty of out time.

I really don't know. But when my dog had her second litter, the big brother from the first litter tried to nurse the pups. It was weird, but cute. He's a real good brother.

I have two cats and both had kittens, one of them did that to the other cat's kittens, some animals do that alot. I find it mysterious.
Don't worry, she will get out of it soon, animals don't always know where their young ones are so they just let any other young nurse.
Goodluck and have fun with those pups!
