it depends on his age, b/c of statutory rape....meaning he could be considered an adult in your state and be in big trouble....so yeah tell him.

Tell him the truth if you've been together for a while a year difference in you age won't matter.
PS. I hope he's turning 17 because if he's 18 that makes him an adult and you two can't be doing it because he could risk going to jail that's when your age is important.

Why did you lie to him to begin with? I mean, eventually he is going to find out any way. Besides, if he truly likes you, the age will not matter. You should tell him the truth.

communication is good in a relationship.. if you want this to become a successful one, why not start by being honest with him?
