There is a great book about desires written by John Eldridge. It's called the Journey of Desire and it talks about the difference between temptation and desire and how to defeat temptation. He gives several examples and I can't really remember any of them, but definitely pick up that book. It's a really good read.

Defeat temptation? Only through death. Even the Messiah was tempted. Temptation will be around us all our lives.

Now, to "overcome" temptation is a different matter.

God says that He will not allow us to be tempted above what we can bear, also He says that he will prepare a way of escape for us all the time. The thing is that sometimes self gets in the way and we should plan ahead to avoid temptation if we are not strong enough to stand up against them. Like if you are addicted to stealing, you would try not to put yourself in the position to deal with money alone or to be alone around stuff that will temp you.

Proverbs 3:5 trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding
Philippians 4:13 I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.
Only through the Help of Jesus will resist temptation. Go and try and do so without Him I challenge you?

Whoever masters this fully without becoming a contemplative Benedictine monk.... would you please tell the rest of us how you did it? We've all been trying to figure out this for two thousand years.

It is very difficult to defeat all temptation - its all around us, even in the little venal material possessions we want frivolously. Take it one day at a time, one temptation at a time. Even one small victory in a day is a big one. (He who succeeds in a little thing, succeeds in much.)

If you are a Christian, then you have the Holy Spirit indwelling you. You need to rely on the Spirits leading and when you do, He will never lead you into temptation.

The scriptural answer is by using the "armor of God" (Eph 6:10-18) Note that the "sword of the spirit" which is the "word of God" is the only offensive weapon in that list. It is the "weapon" by which Christ defeated the tempter (Matthew 4: 1-11).

Everyone has the ability to make a choice. You either say yes or say no to any given temptation.

The bible says that the holy spirit gives you the power to resist temptation. Are you baptized in the Holy Spirit?
