That's the really big question. If we could find the root cause then we would have a better chance of curing it. There is no one cause of cancer.
Cancer is when a cell mutates and then reproduces itself like crazy. The mutated cells replace the normal ones, and don't work as well. A cancer tumor is a mass of cancerous cells; hence the lump in the breast becomes the first sign of breast cancer. A tumor can cause pressure against blood vessels; starving other cells of nutrients and killing them; or it can cause pressure on nerves causing paralysis and pain.
It can be caused by several factors. Cervical Cancer is caused by a sexually transmitted disease, for which a vaccine has just been developed. Radiation can cause cancer. UV rays can cause skin cancer, which is very serious. Over exposure to intense radiation (like from Chernobyl) can cause leukemia and other cancers. The radiation increases the number of mutations in the cellular structure thus increasing the chance of cancer. Tobacco use has been known to cause cancer. Chewing tobacco causes mouth and lip cancer, while smoking can cause lung cancer. What is probably happening is that the tissue is being destroyed and rebuilt, which increases the chance of natural mutations occurring, some of which can become cancerous.
Then there is bone cancer, and organ cancer, which can be caused by several things, usually for reasons we don't know about. We don't know what causes brain cancer and a host of other cancers. We do know that we are exposed to cosmic rays daily, and cosmic rays (a combination of various forms of radiation) can cause mutations. Too many mutations can create cancerous cells. So you can get cancer by just lying in bed. Then there are various chemicals, which are known as cancerous agents: Asbestos can cause lung cancer, while other cancers can be caused by exposure to different chemicals. There are even suspicions that if you live, or go to school under large power lines the electricity can cause cancer.
There are only two ways to treat cancer. First a surgeon can cut if out, but if it spreads (metastasizes) then the only way to kill it is to use Chemotherapy or Radiation. Chemo and Radiation are given to the patient at near toxic levels. The hope is to kill the mutated cells before the normal cells die. The treatment is to try and kill the patient, over a long period of time, in the hope that the cancer will go first. This is why patients under Chemo or Radiation therapy lose their hair, lose weight, and get weak; they are slowly dieing.

Go to www.consumerhealthratings.com, Click on Health Conditions and select Cancer/Oncology. There are some great resources there about Cancer. Maybe start with one of the Editor's Pick links. Resources tend to be ad-free, and user-friendly. All different types of cancer are covered, including pediatric cancers

The immediate cause for cancer is the continuous neglect of the organs of the body by the patient. For example, the lungs of a chain-smoker are continuously irritated. The cancer of the mouth or vocalcords is due to the habit of chewing tobacco, drinking hot tea, etc. In the case of cancer of the uterus, negligence about internal hygiene is the root cause. It has been observed that Jewish women who take grear care of their internal organsdo not normally get cancer of the uterus.

Grief. Anger. Negative emotions add risk as well.
I had it and I am stupidly healthy physically, always was..(Look at Lance Armstrong as well..same story..) The area one gets it, is symbolic as well... We have to remember we are energy, and if one has a weakness or emotional block it makes us vulnerable to dis-ease.
