Ooh the possibilities are endless...
-baseball mitt and ball
-sports card collection starter kit with a few cards
-a puppy
-skateboard, helmet, and a couple cans of spray paint so he can deck out his own board
-a bike
-a football
-a boy's gift basket (ie comic books, gum, candy, sporting equipment, action figures, whatever in a sturdy Rubbermaid container or backpack as opposed to a basket)
-a gift certificate for a store like Footlocker or Sportcheck
-gift certificates for pizza for a month (4 x $20 GCs)
-dinky cars (Hotwheels)
-Lego (always a big hit)
-anything to do with exploring or adventure like a compass, canteen, collapsable shovel, small pocket knife, collection jar for bugs, etc and "wrap" it in a backpack or rucksack

My son is just turning a year in a week or so and I can't wait until he's eight! Buying boy stuff, after two girls, is so cool!

Depends on what he enjoys and how much you want to spend. Remote Control Gas Airplane. Sometimes there a Starter Kit with everything except maybe a battery and they around $150-200. OR, I think they make an electric one that a lot cheaper, just not as nice as the gas, but, it be a way to be sure he would enjoy this.
The links are just for you to check this out, I not sure this the place to buy.

My son is 8 years old. He loves electronics. He has a PDA, a nintendo ds, ipod, etc.. Those might be too much $ if it's not your kid, so look for something similar but cost a little less. If he has a CD player, maybe you could get a couple CDs or something along those lines. If he's not yours find out what he's into to first.

my son is away to be 8 this month and all he's been going on about is 90 trainers(a pair of Nike's with 90 on them) and other football(soccer) stuff of the team he supports often the best bet is giving some money in a card, i know it's not original or anything but kids can't hide the disgust on there faces if they get something they don't like, this way they get to choose what they want. my son loves getting money in cards often more than getting presents

What are his hobbies? Get him something related to the hobby - for instance - if he's into comic books, get him the newest one of his favorites. If he's into a specific sports team - either get him tickets to a game or some other kind of memorabila. If he's a "gamer" get him a new game.

Look up Discovery Toys. They are educational, and are high quality toys. don't get him xbox, ps2 or any of that stuff it will make his grades go down and he won't learn how to have social skills.
