I've heard that they've been blessed by Mohammed and The Virgin Mary, but does anyone have the real reason?

Sorry I was not clear in my question. What I mean to ask is if it is genetic or not. Every tabby I've ever had, including the one I have now, has this "M".

That's part of the classic tabby marking, which originated with the African wildcats, ancestors of the domestic cat.

Most TABBY cats have an "M" on their forehead. The legend goes that when the Virgin Mary had baby Jesus in the stable, it was very cold. Animals came around, and especially a tabby cat, which curled up next to the baby Jesus to keep him warm. Mary subsequently blessed the cat, which now bears the letter "M", seen in stripes on a tabby cat's forehead. I have a grey tabby cat which I named "Emmy" because of this legend.

the cats that have the m's on their foreheads are the tabby cats-one of mine is a tabby and has that noticeable mark.

It's just a common genetic variation in domestic cat appearance. Like stripes, spots, etc.

they don't have a M on their forehead. I have had many cats in my life and I work at a cat shelter. So, no, most DON'T!
