While I am running I feel great but have to stop because I get winded. Does anyone have any breathing tips or suggestions?

All of that is normal. You are just getting in shape.
It's a progressive thing. First run for length and then start running for speed.

I hate to tell you, but you're just going to have to work up to running farther and farther and it's going to hurt for a while. My best advice to try to distract yourself from the pain is to focus your attention to another part of your body (ie- not your breathing). I like to think about the movement of my hands when I'm really winded. At least, then, I'm not thinking about how much my lungs hurt:)

Crazzy_Em's suggestion about gum is a good one too- that helps distract you from the pain too.

Isn't that the point of running? Try running slower. In the military, we ran slightly faster than a brisk walk. At that speed we could run 10 miles without stopping. Also, take a deep breath once in a while.

Other then in though the nose and out through the mouth, I don't have much.. Drink a lot of water before and after. Practice breathing before running to oxygenate your blood. Eat foods high in carbs the day before.

Try to slow your breathing down a little. I had the same problem when I started running. The trick I used was to pace my inhaling and exhaling with my footsteps. For example, inhale during 2 steps and exhale during 2 steps. You focus on your breathing by doing it in time with your steps, and you can figure out the rhythm that works best for you. Good luck!

if you start to get winded slow your pace and breathe through your nose and let out slowly from your mouth that will slow everything down then you can do the opposite to get as much air in as possible but don't want to get light headed breathe in through mouth then push out air form nose and mouth

You go girl - keep running
FYI if you want to burn more calories its best to run sprints then go slow then moderate then slow then sprint
