What would happen to all factions of Christianity in the world if we were to somehow (although unlikely) find out that Joseph and Mary lied about the imacculate conseption? If my mind is clear, I remember that they were not married so they did not have intercourse...but imagine that they actually DID and to save their reputations with their families, they continued to lie about it. What if we have been worshiping Jesus based on a lie? I really hope that is not the case...I was just wondering what would happen to our religion.
I don't want any answers quoting bible verses or saying that we just have to have faith. That's not an answer. When answering a question about religion possibly being a lie, you can't rebut by quoting the bible. It defeats itself. And I'm not some atheist or devil-worshiping radical that is trying to disprove religion. This is a question I've had in the back of my mind for a while now. What do you think?

Dhyana- But according to Christianity, all other religions are wrong...and they are still going on. They've been in existance longer than Christianity. I can agree that it just comes down to faith. Most have missed the point of my question. They keep throwing the bible and faith in their answers. WHAT WOULD HAPPEN TO OUR RELIGION? There, I put it in caps to make it easier to notice. Out of 19 answers, there have been maybe 2 or 3 good ones.

Well, here's some things to think about.

First of all, it'll never happen because even if that were true, there's no way to prove or disprove it.

Second of all, Jesus would still be an amazing person for what He did among the people.

Most importantly, if the immaculate conception was a lie, it wouldn't last. For one man to fulfill hundreds of prophecies in the Bible is statistically impossible already, let alone fulfill them all save one.

For the sake of argument, however, if it weretrue and only recently discovered, you can imagine most of them dismissing it like now and labelled a lie. There would also be tons of discussion about it. Need an example? The Da Vinci Code.

But what matters most is this. In one's quest for truth, are they more interested for truth or just out to prove what they think is right? After all, a biased mind can interpret the most straightforward of evidence in anyway they please. I hope you find the truth and find enough reasons for yourself to support it all the way. God bless. :)

But I AM a "devil-worshiping radical that is trying to disprove religion"!

Well not really I just had to do that because it's cool, but it's not very far from the truth to be sure. Now answer...

Joseph & Mary did ((not)) lie! They never claimed anything about miraculous conceptions or virgin births in the first place. They were normal people and they had baby Jesus, and their son turned out to have a great understanding of the spiritual things, that is all. But you know, they (the orthodox Christians) never were spiritual, so they invented things which are carnal in every way... a physical virgin birth, physical miracles, physical death, physical resurrection, meat, blood, flesh... more blood... some more flesh... bones... hemoglobin everywhere.. etc... this is because they were not spiritual (they were outsiders for heaven's sake). Jesus' teaching is extremely spiritual, so remove all the mythology and you get his real teaching, and ((then)) it makes sense, that's just the way it is sorry have to go it's very late over here.

If our religion was based on a lie, it would not be unlike other religions today that are also based on lies. I am sure that there were be good people and bad people who would continue to act accordingly. Factions within our Government are as we speak trying to remove from existence those things which we hold most sacred. You may not see it in your time, but if we continue this course, future generations may believe the premise you have put forth in your question.

If your faith in Jesus being the Christ is based solely on Joesph and Mary, you need to know there are tons of other things in the book you did not want me to mention fortelling His birth. They didn't lie....neither did the angels when they announced to the shepards that He was here. Do you feel the presence of God in your heart, or are you just believing because you were told to? Try asking God to prove to you that he is real. You are important to Him and I'm sure that he will show you. Ask for something specific...like seeing a hawk or a bluebird when you never see those things in your daily life.

Well, sweetie, if supposing that was the case, then we wouldn't be having this conversation...because IF Jesus IS just an ordinary man none of this would have lasted so long...near 2000 years? Mary would have entered the tomb and anointed His body...Paul would have killed off all of the first christians and it would have all been said and done with...but that isn't the case now, is it?

anything is possible. if this were the case, i do not think anyone would accept it as fact even with undeniable proof. i think religion is less about the details of the bible now and more about the organized control of people and social status than anything else. there are people out there who feel their own ideas in their hearts and yeah for them, really. but the organized part isn't about the semantics, but the politics. people believe what they want or what they're told.

I would have to judge the credibility of the "new" information based on all the other information. However, there are so many other prophecies that were fulfilled with Jesus, that I think I would still believe. Fortunately this scenario will never occur.

Faith is about believing, besides all the books in the bible doesn't refute that Jesus was born of a virgin.
They all agree that he was born of virgin birth.

Dude, have you been living in a cave for the last bunch of months? You've never heard of "The DaVinci Code"--book or movie? It's an interesting treatment of your question.

Ok ...

What if you're right?
And he was just another nice guy
What if you're right?
What if it's true?
They say the cross will only make a fool of you
And what if it's true?

But what if you're wrong?
What if there's more?
What if there's hope you never dreamed of hoping for?
What if you jump?
And just close your eyes?
What if the arms that catch you, catch you by surprise?
What if He's more than enough?
What if it's love?
