Your stomach actually rumbles all the time, not just when you’re hungry. The official term for it is borborygmi. The Greeks originally dreamt up this term in an attempt to represent the sound of the noise itself.
What causes borborygmi?
Liquids in the stomach absorb gas that we swallow in the air, when we eat. As the stomach contracts, to move food around the digestive system it pushes this gas through the liquids. The loud distinctive rumble, which normally crops up when we’re hungry, happens because there is no food in the gut to dampen down the sound.
Why does my stomach contract even when there’s no food to move around?
Because your body has a reflexive response to the desire for food, and starts preparing the stomach for the hoped for food by pushing anything in the intestines towards the rectum.
Some people actually experience borborygmus after meals, since digestion has the same reflex.

Hunger pangs are triggered by a hormone which lets us know we are hungry. Your tummy rumbles when your stomach juices start churning around in anticipation of food to digest.

Hunger pangs are not always caused by hunger would you believe! I heard on the radio the other day that something like 80% of us are seriously dehaydrated every day and that drinking water fixes most hunger pangs and relieves that tired feeling at the end of a hard working day.

The hypothalamus in the brain controls feelings of hunger. Saliva production is controlled mostly by a nervous impulse triggered by the sight or smell of food. When preparing o eat, the stomach produces enzymes such as peptidases in order to digest to food. Because our stomach is made of protein (and we produce enzymes that digest protein - proteases) a burning sensation and occasional pain occurs when our body prepares to eat but there is no food. these enzymes often react with each other, this causes the "rumbles"
