That's a tough question because it depends on your tastes. If you're a stickler for "convention" then a good red wine, like a Cabernet Sauvingon goes with Steak, a White wine will go with chicken and pork, and then a pasta with red sauce (marinara) will have a red wine and pasta with white sauce will be coupled with a white wine.

You can also couple some pastas and salads with a good blush wine, although that may be too sweet for a dinner, depending on your taste preference.

it depends on what you like and where you are eating, and how much experience you have. you sound like you are just beginning so don't spend a lot of money on a bottle of wine. if you are dining out at a decent restaurant ask the server for suggestions. tell them you are trying to match wines with foods and ask why their particular choice goes with your food. again get something mid-priced. there is such a wide range of wine available you do not need to have red with meat, white with fish, etc. there are many white wines that go with a wide range of food. it is easier to start with whites because more people like them. call local distributors and ask about wine tastings. some will have regularly scheduled tastings very inexpensively.

Sauvignon Blanc goes with shellfish. It also goes with unadorned finfish. Fish in sauces call for Chardonnay. Steaks call for Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot. Red pasta calls for Chianti, and white pasta calls for Pinot Grigio. This is a bare bones crash course.
If you have time, look for Andrea Immer's "Great Tastes Made Simple" which is a book on wine and food pairing. Her most recent book, the title of which eludes me, is on the same subject.
