I don't really think it is a marking behavior. I would say that they just don't want to use a dirty litterbox, and so they hold it. After a while, cats will have a good idea of what is acceptably full, from how you clean it. When it gets to that stage, they will hold it until it is clean again.

On the other hand, cats are very communal sometimes, I have often noticed that if one is doing something, like eating (cat food stays out all day here), the rest will join in. Perhaps part of it is the fact that seeing you bothering with the box, piques their interest, and they need to be involved. The only activity they associate with the box is voiding bladder and bowel, so they do.

Actually, there is merit in the scent marking answer. However, this is also a "bonding" experience with the master and the cat. Just like when cats leave their toys in front of your door or next to where you sit. The cat is appreciative of the fact that you have cleaned what amounts to a ton of waste out of it's private toilet spot. He now feels safer to go to the bathroom because the overbearing scent has been cleaned from the litter box. Now, he feels as though his spot won't be found out. It's a gratitude thing.

Get back at the cat. Clean the box 2 seconds after they use it.

I believe it is a scent marking territory thing. Cats are very territorial and "spray" to mark out there areas. When you clean the litter box it takes all of there scent away and they have to lay down some fresh scent.

Because that's what makes them cats. Honestly I think they were made to piss off people. But I love my cat dearly even though she does some irritating crap...in the litter pan...every two minutes.

Cats, along with a large number of animals, have a much greater sense of smell than we lowly humans. They do this to mark "their territory".

Because cats are assholes. I don't even understand why people have them as pets. They are nothing like dogs who show loyalty, respect and gratuity. They even provide protection. Where cats only seem to be interested in themselves and their own pleasures. Sorry, I just don't like cats..
