The rosary beads were originally made from rose wood that is one version of how it got its name although there are other versions too.
The rosary has 10 times as many prayers addressed to mary as to God the father, with none addressed to Christ or the Holy Spirit. It is designed as a devotion to Mary thus exhaulting a human being above God.
Peter the hermit invented the rosary in the year 1090, more than 1000 years after Christ. The rosary represents a form of prayer that was expressly condemned by Christ, for He said, " And in praying use not vain repititions, as the Gentiles do, for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking, be not therefore like unto them."
Yet the priests encourage their people to use the rosary frequently and in giving penances after confession they often assign a certain number of hail marys to be said.
The Bible teaches that the true believer should pray to God reverently, humbly and with a believing and thankful heart.
a mechanical devise similar to the rosary used for counting prayers was in use amongst the Buddists and Mohammedans for centuries befor the rosary was introduced. So its origin is not hard to trace.
This is yet another pagan traditoin used by the Rc church to keep the people away fromt he real Christ and God of the Scriptures. And yet more prayers to dead people, which is whichcraft.

Purpose? Torture.
It's used to keep track of how many times you've repeated a prayer. Once done in confession, the priest tells the person how many prayers they must say to be forgiven. If they have to say 3 "Hail Marys", that's three times however many beads are on the rosary. I've never counted, but I'm sure all rosaries have the same number of beads. If there are 30 beads, that would be 90 "Hail Marys".
I still wonder why they don't think God heard us the first time.
If I were still Catholic, I'd modify the beads down to 1 :D

First, you don't have to say the rosary after confession. I have no idea where you got that idea.
Second, there is a long tradition in many religions of using prayer beads to keep count of the prayers you say. It is unknown when this tradition entered the Catholic Church.
Third, the reason for the spread of the the Rosary is because St Dominic claimed that The Virgin Mary appeared to him in 1208 and told him to establish monastaries over the world and to say the rosary in order to stop the spread of heresy throughout the world.

It's a traditional prayer...nothing more...nothing less. I'm Catholic and I pray the Rosary occasionally. I know others who say it daily. It's available but not mandatory!
One doesn't have to say the Rosary after confession.
Here's a link to one of the many histories of the Rosary available on-line.

You have already gotten some good answers from a few Catholics here. But, a few books that I have really enjoyed about the Rosary is: Saint Dominic and the Rosary- This book is geared toward children but I enjoyed reading it and it goes into the history of the Rosary. The Secret of the Rosary: By Saint Louis de Montfort. I thought this book was wonderful.

The history behind the Rosary originated from the 11th century. The Catholic Church both the Western and Eastern Church recited the 150/151 Psalms. The problem is that most of the lay faithful in Europe were illiterate therefore the Church instead began to have the lay faithful recite 150/151 Our Father Prayers instead of the Psalms. In order to keep track to their prayers the lay faithful used prayer ropes that had 150/151 beads. Later on during the 11th century one of the Popes who's name escapes me at the moment had the lay faithful pray decade (10 Hail Marys Prayers) between each of the Our Father Prayer in honor of His Mother. That was the beginnings of the Rosary over time other prayers would be added to the Rosary and of course the Mysteries, and of course there became fewer and fewer decades on the Rosary. And of course St. Dominic who seen the Virgin Mary was given the 15 Promises about the Graces in which one receives from God by praying the Rosary. The first part of the Hail Mary Prayer is actually came from the Bible from the Gospel of St. Luke, the latter part was added taken from the Council of Ephesus in 431 AD, during the closing prayer of the Council. "Holy Mary Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen" What's intresting about the Council of Ephesus in 431 was St. Cryil of Alexandria defending the Church's tradition that Jesus is one Divine Person who has two natures being the Son of God (Divine) and the Son of Man (human). And that Jesus' Mother is the "Mother of God" being that she gave birth to a Divine Person, she is not the mother of the Divinity of God, nor is she herself God. This was under attack by the heretic Nestorius who believed that Jesus was two persons and that His Mother was not the Mother of God. I should also mention that Ephesus is where the Blessed Virgin Mary lived with St. John the Evangelist before she died.

Once again "amfound2" has provided an answer that is wrong.
Her answers regarding the Catholic Church are riddled with lies and are full of hatred. I hope she knows that lying and hating are offensive to God.
You don't have to say the Rosary after confession.
The answer to where it comes from is here:

Hmmm...It is a string of beads that they made you use while in church if you went to Catholic school. You were to hold a bead for every prayer said, or something. You prayed after you had to make up a lie or two to tell in confession, cause, even though you were such a good kid, you never really did anything wrong....but the nuns never believed that, so you'd make up stuff. The prayers you would say after confession where supposedly supposed to absolve you from your sins; basically, you were begging God for forgiveness for whatever. (Being a kid, I guess....such a sin!) That's all I care to remember about that.

The purpose of the Rosary is to help keep in memory certain principal events or mysteries in the history of our salvation, and to thank and praise God for them. There are twenty mysteries reflected upon in the Rosary, and these are divided into the five JOYFUL MYSTERIES, the five LUMINOUS MYSTERIES, the five SORROWFUL MYSTERIES, and the five GLORIOUS MYSTERIES.
