Should I write Ausacker, Denmark or Ausacker, Germany?

Question

I am doing my family tree and have ancestors from Ausacker, Denmark which is now in Germany. What should I write on my file? Im confused! Is it Ausacker, Husby, Denmark/Germany or Schleswig-Holstein??

The important thing is that you record the place in such a way that you know the location you meant, and so that others can tell what place you meant as well. In practice, it is usually best to record each person's details by naming the place *as it was then known*. Then, in the Notes field (if you are using software) or in a note below the entry (if you are using a Family Group Sheet or something similar) state that this place is now a part of Germany. If there are Danish *and* German spellings, list them both in the notes.

The primary reason I suggest recording the place as it existed at the time is because this method will help you to keep in mind important information as you continue to research. Say, for example, you want to find out if a particular ancestor served in the military. Well, if you wrote that he was born in Germany you might, without thinking, search a database of German soldiers for him. But, of course, if when he was born he lived in Denmark, then you would need a database of Danish soldiers!

Also, record your sources for every bit of information. That way, if you realize you want to know more, you can easily find the information again. And list enough information so that, even ten years from now, you would know enough to find the source again.
