I recently moved across the world (military). my dog stayed at my paretns house. My husband and I are wanting to fly him over here to live with us now that we have a house with a big yard. How stressful will the flight over be on him? Is it worth it? Money is not a factor here at all. I want my doggie here but not at the expense of his well being. Many people have their dogs from home here so I know it CAN be done, but do you think it is mean? The flight is so long-I do not want him to be scared!

i know how you feel about trying to have a dog shipped over here. the airlines have special regulations with heat for shipping animals. i also am over in japan with the military and my husbands mother runs a dog kennel. she had a dog shipped to her from russia to oklahoma and he is doing just fine. but also he was only 10 months old. we are planing on shipping our dog over here in sept or october after the heat restrictions on his breed are kicked down and our dog is going to be a year old in november. how old is your dog, that also needs to be factored in, if he is young then i think he should be able to handle it, espically if you put him to sleep for the plane rides. now if he is older, then i would leave him with your parents.

but i hope you get your doggie, because i think it is great to have a pet around to make it feel more like home, espically in the military. hope you enjoy your stay in japan!

i hate to scare you but you also have to consider the safety of your dog. a lot of airllines just put dogs in the luggage hold, so you have to make sure that you get an airline with an oxygenated and pressured hold. also, since the hold is at the bottom of the plane, your dog could be harmed in the event of a crash.if the plane is forced to land/crashes on water, im not sure anyone will bother about your dog. also, some flights are extremely long, and some dogs have been known to go mad while travelling on long flights in luggage holds. if your dog is a little dog that can be put in a carrier, you might be able to convince some airlines to let him travel with you or a family member. but if it's across the world, japan might not even let your dog into the country....
you need to consider all these things before you fly your dog across the ocean.

If I was staying in another country for a long time I would not hesitate to bring my dogs over with me. There are a lot of things that you can do to make it a safe trip 1. Check all the air lines see what their procedures are for transporting animals. 2. Check with your dogs vet to see what they would suggest for transporting your dog. Often there is medications that the vet can give your dog to make transporting them even safer. 3. Can you break the trip down for your dog so there would be shorter in the crate times? May a layover location that the dog could stay over at? 4. If you are in the Military do you know anyone in the air force that could bring your dog over with them?

you could probaly contact a vet and have him given anesthetics before so he sleeps most of the way. that is what they do with animals at the zoo and it works realy good. the other option is for you to find a cruise that allows dogs and you fly back and take him there on the ship. this way he is not cramped in a little cage and being with you would make him a lot less stressed

From the U.S. to Japan is streeful enough for some people, but for a dog to be confined to a small cage in the cargo compartment of the plane for a day, or two. I personally wouldn't do it.
