An excellent point! I am a psychologist and I am bit alarmed at some of the answers given to quite technical, medical questions. While a small % of the questions I have seen are obviously from 'cranks' most of them seem genuine and the people concerned are obviously anxious about their condition.
I agree with your point, re drugs, and people who are not medically trained should NOT be giving advice on drugs at all - even if they have just read up on then in Wikipedia (not always a reliable source!!!!).
I think this type is site is fun - but this medical section is becoming a genuine concern for me.

I'm a registered mental nurse, my credentials can be checked on NMC. I answer questions relating to mental health, others to general health because many mental health patients do have physiological problems as well.
However i always urge caution when people ask about stopping their medications or ask about different ones. I can answer certain questions if i would never advise anyone to try such or such medication, because i really don't know who i'm talking to! It's impossible to assess anyone on the net. There is also the added danger that the person might be treated for a certain condition that would render taking other medications very dangerous! There is also the problem of potential allergies, height/weight of a person/ what stage of an illness they're at, their resistance/lack of to some drugs etc. So i always recommend they see their doctor/psychiatrist etc.

If someone on here asks the question they obviously want Jo Bloggs to answer and would be lacking in intelligence to follow the advice if not given by their own doctor. I dont see any harm in people sharing their experience of a particular medication so long as they state that they re not a doctor and that their point of view is given as advice not direction.

People here should understand that our answers are mere opinions that we retreive from personal experience. I think most people here understand just because one type of med works for one person doesn't mean it would work for another.
I understand that a lot of the difffernt meds out there can be dangerous but it is a controlled substance that needs to be prescribed by a doctor. Well I hope people would go to their doctor and not get it off the streets.
So to answer your question I think it is fine to give our opinion because it could lead the person to the doctors office to get professional advice.

I think as long as someone states that this was THEIR experience with a particular drug and they tell them they should always consult with their doctor, since every one is different, I don't see the harm in people sharing their experiences and the pros and cons of different drugs. Hopefully when people ask about a drug they are just curious of other people's experiences and are not using this site as an on-line doctor.

Whenever a medical question comes up I refer people to their doctor. I am not qualified to diagnose or prescribe and if I was I reckon you would need to see the person and see their medical records. The only advice one can give is a trip to the doctor!

NO we should NEVER advise anyone to take any kind of drugs because we have no ideal what can happin to then by taking them. We can explane what it dose to us but we can't know what it will do to them. So if someone is wanting to try a new drug they should ask a DR. because the Dr will know if there system can take the drug they are asking about. And if someone has be on a med. they should also see a Dr if they want to stop taking it to. DONT ever just stop taking any meds that you have been on for a pried of time see a Dr first...................

Answers to these sort of questions can only be given from personal experiences. The only persons really qualified to answer these questions is a doctor or nurse.

We can answer based on our own experience, but people should not be able to get hold of these things without a prescription from the doctor anyway.
From my experience I would recommend not using anti-depressants and go for ECT instead. But don't take my advice, ask a doctor!!!!

No, that's why I don't answer them, because I'm not a Dr. and I'm not going to be responsible for someone's overdose. Besides medical questions are for your Dr. unless the meds aren't being perscribed by a Dr. and that's why they're on answers getting the information they need.
