make sure that there is plenty of heat, to cold of a solder iron will cause a bad fillet, you want enough heat for the type of solder your using and also make sure to use flux, this will help with the smoothness of the fillet and let it get to where you are trying to get it to (inside holes or to flow around a lead or bend) you don't want the heat to high though because you can burn the item you are trying to solder to as well. good luck.
