They are useful in their own ways.

A mat provides a clean area to practice.
It cushions your knees in poses. (You can buy extra thick mats for extra-cushioning also)

The toesies & gloves provide extra grip so you don't slip during the poses.

You probably don't need a mat if you have a clean carpeted place where you practice & don't mind your sweat falling on the carpet. (Remember many poses require you to be face down on the floor, so the carpet better be clean). You can also buy a carpet instead of a mat to do your poses, however a yoga mat is "sticky" & so the likelihood of slipping is less.

The toesies & gloves are only needed if you want extra grip to prevent slipping in the poses.

I always yoga socks and gloves, if I'm home I don't like being contained to a mat and my carpet gives enough padding. My hands and feet sweat a lot, I have hyperhydrosis, the socks and gloves keep my hands and feet from sliding around my mat when it gets wet. I like Asana Socks sock and gloves sets as I like to have my toes covered. If you're doing yoga on a hard floor it's always best to use a mat for padding.
