I had heard that they could be fitted in cars which don't have them but after reading (Actual Reality)'s answer I m really not sure.

I don't think so - I say this because the the first step in airbag deployment is a signal from sensors that are in the front portion of airbag equipped vehicles. Then the airbag needs an electrical connection. The wire harness (electrical wiring) in the instrument panel would need a "takeout" (electrical line) to power the airbag on the drivers side and passenger side as well. Don't forget, pressing on the airbag also beeps your horn too. So with all of that in mind, it wouldn't be readily possible, unless you did a full tear down like those guys do on that show Pimp My Ride. The airbag covers themselves are fitted to the instrument panel on passenger side modules. Something else that is by design. The driver side ones are also an integral part of the whole assembly. Each assembly is going to be unique to that vehicle design. The new Ford Explorer and new Mercury Mountaineer are of the same design - only the cover is different in design (logo) and color as well. But overall, it wouldn't be possible to retrofit a vehicle without a complete teardown.

Yes, you can have them installed in just about any car. It is very expensive though. You may as well go ahead and just buy a newer car that comes with them.

And by the way, the electrical system and censors that the other guy was talking about is the reason they are so expensive. It can be done though.

Yes, but once your mother in law gets in, it's hard to get her to get OUT. (just kidding).
