I have never used a mat at home, however, I do use a sheet to separate my body from the carpet.

A mat is not absolutely necessary. It is useful for a few things. It defines the parameters of the posture, it is cushy, and it makes the floor not slippery (carpet would work, but sheet?). You can tell for yourself if you need it.
