you can install XP over 98se without loosing any data files, but all of the other program files will be replaced. Most of the software installed might not be compatible with XP and hence not run. The big negative is you will have to use the FAT32 partition and not NTFS(which has more benefit's), if you upgrade the OS.
Do check if your hardware supports WindowsXP first

No you dont have to uninstall 98se, but you should be aware that after upgrading some of your windows 98 programs may not be compatible with XP, and a result will not work in normal XP mode. However, XP does have the ability to run older programs using Windows 98 compatibility mode.

Not at all. You can keep your existing files and make a Dual OS PC.
1. Make a partiton to install XP Home. It's capacity should be at least 5GB.
2. During the XP setup select Upgrade.
3. After installation you'll be asked to choose between 98SE or Windows XP Home.
Good Luck !!!

You don't have to uninstall 98, you'd just simply create a new partition for XP during the setup process.
If you choose to format the hard drive then yes you will lose all of your files. It's a good idea to burn your files to a CD before any upgrades.
Also keep in mind that a computer built in 1999 running Win98 isn't going to do so well with XP unless you upgrade some of that old hardware first. You can try it, but I promise it's gonna be SSSSLLLLLOOOOOWWWW and you're gonna have tons of problems.

no no......
if you are installing XP you can install it without loosing all your files.
if you are uninstalling 98 then you should uninstall only that drive in which the program files of 98 are installed all other drives should remain as it is. you willl be asked while uninstalling which drives are to be removed.

NO, but play it safe & DEFINITELY BACK UP
ALL your files before you even THINK about it.
W A R N I N G :
DO NOT SKIP DATA BACKUP HERE UNLESS YOUR DATA IS NOT IMPORTANT & YOU DONT CARE IF IT GETS GANKED.
& AVOID XP HOME edition, it's more crash prone.
get XP PROFESSIONAL edition if you can.
also, that dastardly Bill Gates tries to force you to change over to an NTFS file system if you try to do a fresh install on a new harddrive when you start off using the XP cd,the choice for Fat32 will not be present but you can get around that by using 3rd party formatting software or the specific tools that come WITH a the new harddisk if have them. REMEMBER: 98 CANNOT see an NTFS partition. I use MULTIPLE 250gigabyte dataforts, each separated into 8 31gig FAT32 partitions [the last one is smaller] for full access to ALL MY data whenever I choose to boot into win98se to use non xp-compatible productivity software, old webcam software[MOST of which will quickly bluescreen any xp system by de$ign], & some games.
anyway, an operation like this is MAJOR. & MANY things can & will go wrong if you dont back up ALL your data to cdr or a DIFFERENT harddrive first. do NOT get lazy & try to perform an operation this major without backing up your data, unless you really dont care about it that much. trust me. Microsoft products SUCK by default, and WILL gank ALL your data if you let it.
Important Filesystem considerations for multi-boot O.S. cravers:
NTFS= limited to XP & 2000 only. &features fake NTFS"security"
FAT32= WIN98,2000,XP & even3.11if you dare. [+ME sux. avoid it]
XP's "compatability mode" also SUCKS !!! ...what a JOKE.
KEEP a fat 32 file partition if you want to continue using all that powerful software you paid for. it kills me how people dont think about things like that. like jumping from photoshop6 to photoshop cs, never stopping to think that cs is NOT compatible with all your coolest old photoshop plug-ins. forcing you to go out an re-buy all your old capabilities back ...$$$cha-chinggg!!!$$$
Microsoft operates like that, instead of making software that simply WORKS they try to force you to RE-BUY everything every few years or so calling that an "upgrade" while the new, unproven software IF it exists DOES NOT work as well as the your old version with it's uglier old, but MORE POWERFUL interface. & people KEEP falling for this year after year.
he's doing it again with his sorry-@$$ed-VISTA.
....rrrrrRRRRHHH... dont get me started....
