The Microsoft system for checking validity is supposed to be passive, only preventing you from updating your copy of windows.

IN the UK at least it would be an offence for a company to 'damage' your system by, what would be in effect, a Trojan.

It sounds more like you have another fault and the message is just a coincidence or maybe you have a virus/Trojan which is using this 'error' as a pretty bad joke.

Try booting in safe mode and see if you can get control.

BTW is the copy genuine? If you caught it with the laptop then go back to where you bought it and get them to sort it. Unless your HD is trashed you should be able to get your work back.

Good luck.

You do indeed have a dodgy copy of Windows. You get this message when you attempt a Windows update with a non-genuine copy of Windows. However, it would not cause any problems on your Laptop. I suggest that this is unrelated and just a coincidence. The only problem this causes is an annoying pop-up message and not being able to do a Windows update.

The windows that is installed is not genuine...ask your laptop vendor for a genuine version of windows... you must have updated the system from the microsoft site that did the trick... go to the shop if you don't know anything about it... he would be able to salvage your data and reinstall windows...

It sounds like when someone installed Windows on your laptop that they USED the cd disk again, (making it not genuine). They had already used that cd disk on someone eles computer and used the same KEY CODES, making it not a genuine version.

In short already USED KEY CODES.

Did you have it serviced at anytime.......where windows had to be re-installed?

I did on my other PC and it is saying the same thing. Evidently the repair place was fraudulent and didn't install the true version. They say if you can prove it they'll send you the real deal free.
