Quick lowering of uric acid is not recommended as it may cause severe pain due to gout attack. Slower lowering using allopurinol low doses is better.

The key answer is diet. Too much rich food, even drink can could build up.
I used to drink coca-cola by the crate and had endless problems.
I now try and drink at least 2 litres of water a day on top of tea/coffee. It helps to flush out the kidneys.
I once had a bad attack of gout in my foot. I went to my GP who prescribed Naproxen. Within 24 hours, the pain had gone.
I haven't suffered now for 15 years.

Cut down on acidic foods. Tomatoes peppers onions. Coffee and tea can trigger it off.
This link lists at the bottom what foods to avoid and what to eat.
