I'll quote some words I learn from Animal Planet:
"When the buying stop, the killing can too"
Reffering those words, it means the demand for cigarettes drive the factorie(s) keep producing cigarettes. When the smokers aren't here anymore (stop the market chain for cigarettes), so will the producer(s)
Remember, "The earth can satisfy our need, but can not satisfy our greed"

Because people buy them.
Same reason people produce Twinkies. Probably more people die each year of Twinkies than cigs. Cancers are turning out more and more to be caused by viruses. Other cig related diseases are ones of chronic heavy smoking for long periods of time. Chain smokers who've smoked for 40-60 years for example. The avg smoker who smokes half to a full pack a day without other contributary factors is not in that much danger. It's the smoker who worked at the chemical factory, the developing shop, the construction site welding and so on. What is more interesting is that the other people who didn't smoke who worked there are at risk as well. The combination of smoking and that activity only raised the smoker's risk. Instead of identifying the causes we just blame smoking and let the other people die.
Smoking does raise the risk of heart attacks. When you see a long lived smoker it's almost always a skinny smoker. Then again when you see somebody who's 90 years old they were almost always skinny anyway, whether or not they smoked. Seems that being overwieght is dangerous to your health.
So is stress. It's actually our biggest killer but it does so indirectly. It causes overeating, smoking too much, drinking too much, fights, accidents, heart disease, lowered imunity systems, depression, suidcide and tons of other health problems. Have we banned obnoxious bosses? Slow drivers in the left hand lane? Commuting?
The reality is there are many ways to die. There are even many ways to live which are worse than dieing. One of those would be to make the world truely safe. If it got too bland, too safe, too monolithic what's the point of having the gift of life anyway?
