well that all depends on how much you make at work a month... and with the price of gas these days its going to take you a long time to come up with all the money. I was a Transporter at one time in my life and i know from experience that it takes a lot to live on the road. BUT its fun and to go places you have never been to see things you have never seen is the most wonderful thing in the wold.

Your options are limitless. I have been all over the world. You can even travel throughout Europe on a limited budget. They have what is called a Eur-rail pass which gives you the ability to get on and off the trains throughout Europe for 30-90 days anywhere and however often you want. The rail system in Europe is wonderful and takes you almost everywhere. There are also Youth Hostels which are really cheap dorm style hotels. You can also find overseas flights online at a good price. So if you are adventurous you can pack a backpack and tour Europe for very little money. But I would advise you take a friend with you as traveling alone in this way isn't safe or very much fun. Happy travels!

Depends what your job(s) pay and what you want to be able to do, where you stay, what you eat, how you get around, how long you want to travel ..... You could look into getting a holiday work visa depending on where you want to go. Many european countries offer such visa but you need to pass a test to determine if you can speak the language well enough. For english speakers working holiday visas are available and relatively easy to get for the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa. I'm not sure about language requirements for Japan. You need to have a minimum balance in your bank account; the amount varies country to country. The duration of the visas also varies. And of course there is usually a minimum age requirement. There are many agencies which help you get a visa and provide limited support for finding a job, place to live, getting an overseas bank account, etc. Its a good idea to have this kind of visa as it doesn't tie you down, you don't have to rely only on what you have in your home bank account, its a great way to meet other travellers AND to really mingle with the locals and get a greater experience of the country. Also most visa do not restrict your movement in and out of the country so you could use one country as a base for making money to fund excursions elsewhere. If you consider this option the contact the embassy of the country you plan to visit or one of the travel agencies which specialize with this.

The most expensive thing is food. Buy a good insolated cooler. Cook food the week ahead of your trip and freeze it. Pack the freezer the morning you leave with the frozen stuff on the very bottom and the layers of ice and smaller items on top. I take frozen hotdogs/canned baked beans, and cook roast with potatoes and carrots and freeze them separate and reheat them on a cheap coleman cookstove. (Be sure you know how to safely operate it before you leave) Take on small skillet and one small pot (and a coffee pot) Take cereal and sandwich fixings. Keep another small cooler for soft drinks (stop at a grocery store if you run low) Do not buy expensive food in resturants.
Take a small box of bandaides, sunscreen and neosporin (and all meds you take regularly)
Remember you can stop at a laundromat if you run short of clothes, do not pack too much. Take a slicker for rainy days. And change for parking meters.
Then find a map and go. The best vacations are ones that you enjoy eating by the roadside tables. Or stop by a quiet stream. There are roses to smell and fields to fly kites in. Do not let your $ hold you back. Enjoy! (oh yeah, be sure you have some decent tires and you car is well maintained) Money is like anything else... only good when you enjoy it... not too great sitting on a shelf.

I think it all depends on how much you want to spend and for how long you will be traveling. i suggest that you save an amount and abit extra. the extra bit you convert into travelers cheques and keep aside with you when travelling or leave it to someone trust worthy so when you do run out of cash you can call home. (make it your emergency money). the other amount use it to buy your ticket and whatever necessary things, but be careful. travel to places you can work as a casual and use that money to live off. (eg. i travelled to Greece and worked on an orange grove, Israel is a good place to start. you can work and live on a Kibbutz and its a good life, you get free food and accommodation. i come from Israel, so if you need to know anything give me a shout. don't forget to do lots of research before you travel. good luck and take care

Travel can be as cheap or as expensive as you make it.

First you need to make a list of the places you want to visit.

Then work out how long it would take to get there, and how much.

What kind of accomodation would you like? Can you see yourself back packing, or do you need 5 star hotels with room service?

What will you do when you get to your destination? Self guide or do tours?

Once you work out these things, then you will have an idea of how long you need and how much you will need. When it comes to the $$$ figure, double it.

I hope you can make it happen. Traveling is a very rewarding experience.
