The left hand ring finger is where the engagement and the wedding ring are worn because it is directly to the heart.
Look, ball your left hand into a fist and try extending your thumb, forefinger, middle finger, ring finger and pinky finger one at a time. You'll find out that it's only your ring finger that you can't stretch out. That's because the ring finger symbolizes the heart and if the ring is worn there, it means you'll be connected forever.

I always figured that it's the finger where it's least likely to get in the way, since it's on the left hand, which is the non-dominant hand for most people, and it's not on either side of the hand. So people can wear it on the left ring finger for a long time with the least annoyance.

I would say it's the same reason I wear a watch on my left wrist. I use it less, so I can use my right hand more effectively.
