There is controversy among veterinary dermatologists on how prevalent food allergies are in dogs. The one I worked for believed only 5-6% of dogs with allergies have a food allergy. Feeding a diet available at the pet store is not the best way to diagnose a food allergy. If you really want to know if it is a food allergy - you need to feed a hypoallergenic diet (such as science diet Z/D or D/D) for 8-10 weeks - feeding only the chosen diet not treats or rawhide etc...
Dogs are often allergic to airborne offenders just like people are, so allergy testing is something to think about. Before allergy testing though (it can be expensive) you should have your dog checked for mites .(this is inexpensive) If you do consider allergy testing - make sure you go somewhere where they can do the skin test. Allergy shots given based on blood test very often do not offer the animal much relief.
Medications can be given also to treat allergies, your vet can provide you with the many options available such as antihistamines and steroids.
p.s. - my dobe has allergies to airborne and food ( certain foods give her hives)- I give her the allergy shots and she does not itch. Good luck with your dog.

If your dog is allergic to a food, you have to find out what they are allergic to!!! You should see a vet and they will help you with a course of food trials to see what the dog is sensitive to. Usually they will start the dog on a food that contains a limited number of ingredients and go from there. If it is the protein, like beef, or chicken..they have foods that are duck, rabbit, venison, or fish. If it is soy or wheat or the artifical colors, they will find that out to.
It can be an expensive and long process!!!!! You might try treating the dog for fleas, giving her a food that does not have soy or artifical colors, and going from there.
Pedigree is NOT a good choice. It has a lot of colors in it!!!!!
Stay away from the organic foods that list a lot of different grains too. Some of those more expensive foods like Wellness,Innova and others list so many grains and other ingredients that is would be hard to tell what the allergen is!!!!!!!!!
Seeing a vet is a good first step. They may think it is something other than a food allergy!!!!!!!
Good Luck!!!

You may need your vet to do some allergy testing on the dog. To see what the dog is actually allergic to it may not be just the food you are feeding him or her. As far as a good food for the dog I use Hill's science diet for my dogs. gl with your dog

From what I understand, it's uncommon that a dog is allergic to its food. It could be a number of things though. Try using a skin and coat supplement in his food.

The scratching could be scabies. See you vet immediately.Try giving rice mixed with soured yogurt (Mix half tsp sugar if necessary). Otherwise if you are taking of packaged dog food PEDIGREE is good. Hope it is available in your place. Most dogs love it too
