In Hinduism its called upavasa i.e upa = near ; vasa = live;

the purpose of upavasa is to forget everything and think only about god...did u get it? sit near god..and think of nothing else..

obviously in time, this principle is lost and it has become a meaningless tradition....

though, it is good for digestion, to fast, to not eat anything for a day, it refreshes the digestive system...

also, religion comes from renunciation, by controlling passions , by controlling the senses..

and it is said that the tongue is the greatest organ to control...there is a story about shiva the hindu god saying that tongue is the most difficult organ to control..

excess food and luxury in food gives rise to sexual desires the yogis say..

u see that monks dont eat things like chocolates or drinks or meat or any such lavish food...coz it ignites passion...

so control of tongue, periodically puts it under check...

the actual meaning of fasting is forget everything and think about god...for a day when its repeated periodically, people will remember god in their lives..

while the muslims fast..so as to remember all those people who dont have anything to eat....

this reminds them of all the people who are suffering of povery and other problems, and reminds them that they should help those people out...

I have fasted many times in the past and from what I've learned is there is many different forms of fasting. Some fast for no particular reason and some fast in search of answers. I fasted in search of answers and when I fasted it was with no in take of any kinds of foods or drinks....for me it was the best way to imitate death without actually dying and I did this because of my beliefs and worship of God and Jesus Christ and the knowledge that I came away with...from all the fasting I did, was self discipline or to discipline my flesh. But I did it to find perfection, which I later found was not possible through works but was only possible through the free gift of God Jehovah called Grace. So now, I don't fast.

for catholics fasting during lent (i mean hardcore roman catholics here) means you can't eat meat, sweets, and must lower your general food intake. eating meat and sweet things is though be easy to overdo, leading to gluttony. some won't eat during the day (when its light out) or will only eat before morning mass, and after evening mass. it varies because it depends on your parish. some say that you have to pick only one thing to give up, others that you have to pick one thing and can't eat meat on fridays. excluded are the young, old, pregnant, and sick people.

the whole point is to free your soul from your bodily needs, and to focus on your spiritual needs. when i used to fast, i only felt hungry the first 2 or 3 days. after that your body gets used to it and you actually feel lighter. you even forget that you have to eat. but then i was always a skinny person and i rarely felt the need to eat anyway, so it was easy. its a lot like meditation. which is still do, even though i don't believe in god anymore. a fast every now and then is ok, as long as it isn't being overdone.

Muslim fast means to keep away from food(totally) and from bad things from dawn(fajr) till sunset(maghrib)
It has been introduced because we should have control over our will and desire. We get experience how the poor people feel when they have nothing to sometimes.and many more things.Scientifically it is good because our stomach needs rest atleast 30 days in a year.

In Hindu fast you can eat fruits and drink milk and by this you can quench your thirst and hunger but in Muslim's fast you should be away from every bad thing and food.
there are more things but this answer is enough for your question.

May ALLAH(Tala) guide us to the right path

Members of my church fast on a regular basis, usually once a month, if they are able. We do not eat or drink anything for a period of 24 hours or 2 meals. While fasting, we can pray to give thanks to God or to ask special blessings for ourselves and others. Also, we give the money we would have spent on food, and more if we desire, to the church to help the poor and needy.

Fasting helps us to gain control of our bodily appetites and helps us to focus on being more obedient and humble before God. Also, it gives us an opportunity to help those who aren't as blessed as we are. We can fast whenever we want to do it as a way to show thanks to God or when we feel that we or people we know need extra help. I have found strength to overcome temptation through fasting. I feel it's a great blessing in my life.

The only thing I get from fasting is anger because I am hungry. No spiritual awakening occurs.

I dont know and I don't care. you need to take a closer look at the Bible ( you know the big book God wants us to read) and take some time to figure out who Jesus was and is. he is so much more than, as you say, " he was just a normal person who was helping people in need." read the bible without your reference books, sir. do that before telling people lies about the One who died to save your sorry life.

fasting is an exercise in self control. When you are fast asleep you wake up and have breakfast.
