I will be getting married to someone from Africa next year. I was wondering if anyone knew of any good websites or resources for bringing together an American and an African culture into a wedding.

My fiance is from Congo, and this is where we met. I know a lot about Congolese culture...but how do we preform a marriage in the states incorporating the two cultures so that all our families understand. Are there any resources available? Also it will be difficult to plan ahead due to visas.

Dear Bride-to-be,

When I was very young, we lived in Nigeria, West Africa because my father was a professor at Uniben (University of Benin City). First thing to know is that Africa has many diverse cultures--each ethnic group and region is very different. What country is your future husband from? Was his family from a tribe in particular? Have you visited his city/state? I think it is important to know, see, feel, and experience Africa with all of your senses. It is an amazing continent beyond any of the stereotypes that the west has created. If he has a sister or female cousins, ask them to help you understand how the marriage ceremony is performed.

Involve both families in the wedding planning. Get ideas from everyone and then eliminate the weaker ideas until you have 5-6 really good ones. Do the same for the reception.

Why don't you discuss it with both of your families? I'm sure that each group will be well aware of your separate cultures, and they'll probably be happy to work together to make your wedding work.

Congrats, by the way. :)

Why do you want website for this.
Wedding is wedding for that matter.
Why do you worry about race and culture.
Marry any person of any race and culture.
You remain a human being and marry a human being.
When life is short, why do you worry about such things.
