YES! I knew I wasn't the only one. I just graduated and the fact that on a final exam someone in my class used "u" in every other sentence and passed really makes me re-evaluate my education lol. I know people who've learned English as a third language who use better grammar and spelling. It's spreads beyond "u" too. I guess "see" is too time consuming to write out so people just put the letter C. I bet in a few years, we'll have minimized actual words so much that our vocabulary will just consist of strings of two or three letters of the alphabet so instead of saying "good night" we'll say "g n ttyl". I don't generally use it but I've learned to accept it. :)

Language is a weird and constantly changing thing, as any poor sap whos taken a linguistics course or two will tell you. Even 'Netspeak' and shorthand online slang is part of this process. Things that used to be abberations of linguistic form soon become the norm, and vice versa.
For fun, check out how the word "ask" and the word "axe" flopped about in the English language sometime (and don't let anyone say that its just "all Ebonics"!). U m@y h@v3 fUn, d00d!

No I am not annoyed. Actually I use it myself. I use instant message at work and I find it quicker and more convenient. It is not meant on my part to be rude. I think I would get over my feelings and not try to change or control what is not yours to control. Otherwise you could feel anger or upset with someone and they did not intend to be offensive. There is enuf :) real stuff to get upset with in the world. By the way how come language was not written phonetically? That would make it simpler. Have fun!

What I'm annoyed by is the people who can't even phrase a normal English sentence! UH. Using u or ppl or abbreviations don't bother me as long as their sentence is constructed in a manner where we can understand it!

Actually it's two letters they save, and yes it annoys me. But so does most of the poor grammar and typing around here.

Yes, the mobile phone, or cellphone, has a lot to answer for. It has created a generation of people who cannot write in any cohesive manner. Their spelling and grammar are abysmal. I worry for the future, I really do.

Yes, yes, yes! The use of text message language is plain lazy! I'm a real old fart, I get upset about the incorrect use of the apostrophe too! (It's either an age or a teacher thing!)
