For short range use, there is a kinda new radio service, which, unlike CB radio (AM) is on the higher frequency FM bands. It is called FRS or family radio service. It's use does not require a license and they are generally sold in pairs. The better ones cost around $60. Motorola has cell phones with built in "walky talky" service that can be used all over the country, but that is normally used on a company network. The nice thing about the FRS units is they are small and have a very short antenna, where as the CB's are much larger and have a very long antenna by comparison. The top brands, like Cobra or SW Bell are sold like by Wall Mart, Best Buy etc.

A socalled walkytalky is a hand held short wave radio usually to communicate with nearby people on the same wave length. They come in citizen's band wave lengths and FCC licensed wave lengths such a ham radio. Radio Shack usually has them, if you have someone to talk to on your wave length.
