My father in law is a physician and would get many mother's who came to his asking why their babies (who all had corn rows) had bumps, redness, and balding spots on their heads. He would tell them that they were too little to have their hair pulled into a style because it was new and thin and that the scalp was still too sensitive. They would yell at him and threatened to report him for being racist. In the end, they would go to different doctors who would tell them that it was normal. Eventually, most of them would come back and told him that the symptoms went away after they took off the corn rows and let the skin rest. The added stress on the scalp from corn rows and other styles that require the hair to be taught or too secure can cause these and other problems such as head aches or pain... a child may not be able to tell you this, especially if they can't speak or signal where it hurts... So, I think that you should wait until your child is 2 or 2 1/2 because they will be better able to communicate with you about possibel pain or uncomfortable feelings... that's what I'm doing for my son... I get alot of crap from people because of it, but it is in his best interest for me to wait until his hair and scalp are not so sensitive. Besides, he's still my baby and I want to let his hair grow a little wild before I get the calls from the school for his unruly hair!!! Enjoy the soft baby hair and get lots of pictures!!! Before you know it, they'll be begging you to cut, style and braid it!!! Best wishes!!! :-)

Depends on the size and how heavy handed the braider is. Younger kids under 2 should stick with bigger parts, especiall so they're little hairs don't get pulled out around the edges. My aunt got my little cousins hair braided starting at age 2,back when it was popular to get the style where you got the cornrows, then added the teeny tiny prebraided extensions through with a cross stitch (I can't remember the name of th style). Anyways my little cousins hair broke off tremendously for these reasons:
-the people always braided too tight (she got those little bumps around the edges)
-her hair wasn't kept moisturized and it broke off from being so dry
-it was done too often. the minute one set of braids came down, another set was braided.
She's 20 yrs old now and her hair has grown, but her scalp was so damaged from the braids that her hair didn't really start growing until she was in junior high! So if you do go for cornrows, just remember big parts, not tight, and most importantly keep the hair oil-sprayed or moisturized with a hair creme often. And if you're braiding the kids hair to help it grow, taking it down should be as delicately as braiding it up. You don't want to tangle, rip and tear the hair out after all that work has been done. Take your time.

My dear that all depends on the child, the texture and legth of the childs hair and the hair dresser. Some children can takealot while others are very fussy. If the childs hair is long you can put a few for starters and slowly get them used to the idea of being plaited. If the child has coarse thick hair then it will take a little more convincing . Naturally you can not imagine dong things to your childs hair untill they can at least sit up on their own. A child above 5 months of age can be braided but introduce them to it slowly carefully and put a few cornrows at a time till they get used to it.Hope they look pretty and best of luck. And hey do not make them tight it will hurt baby

It depends on the child and the braider. My nephew started get them when he was about 5 months. But get them used to combing and stuff like that cause she had to do his hair in his sleep. And make sure the person braiding is very very gentle. GOod Luck

Definitely old enough to tolerate discomfort! 10? 11? 12 or older?? They look very cute, but they kinda hurt as they're being done. And if they start to itch, a baby won't be able to say what's wrong.

When they're old enough to sit still and have enough hair to braid. Babies with cornrows are so cute. I wanna get my 3 yr old daughter's hair braided, but I don't think she'd stay still. She gets pissed when I try to put her hair in ponytails, lol.
