It's when you crack a tendon in the sole of your foot, and it hurts. The pain I've endured has ranged from (these are metaphors) a large, deep bruise to pottery shards embedded in my heel. I walk everywhere, and stand all day at work. What should I do?!!?

Oh yeah, ain't it a pain?

1) do stretching exercises to lengthen the tendons in the back of your leg. Sorry, I can't describe them, but a web search for heel pain will turn up illustrations.

2) NSAIDs like Ibuprofen will reduce the swelling and pain

3) arch supports help a lot--my Dr. recommended SPENCO brand; don't bother with Dr. Shoals

4) shoes with 2" heels can be more comfortable than flats

5) shoes with really squishy soles help a lot

6) don't go barefoot, even around the house. Try to walk/stand on soft flooring rather than concrete or tile

7) you can get splints to wear at night that keep your tendons stretched. Haven't tried this, but may in the future

8) a friend recommended DMSO, I've been using it for 3-4 days and it seems to help. It's a cleaning solvent that's been found to help alleviate swelling and arthritis. Get it at a health food store.

The primary source of the problem in cases of plantar fasciitis is the calf. Think of the calf, Achilles tendon and plantar fascia as on long connected band called The CT Band. Plantar fasciitis is simply an overuse syndrome where CT Band delivers a load to the fascia that is greater than what can be healed in a 24 hour period of time.

Lee M has it right. Those recommendations are right on, especially the calf stretches.

Make sure your shoes fit you properly. Spare no expense when it comes to shoes. I have not found an insert that works, The Doctor gave me Nueronton (RX) I have heard that they now use Cymbalta as a substitute for Nueronton. It is also an anti depressant. The podiatrist said he could give me shot of cortisone in my feet. From what I have been told the cortisone does not leave the body. I have not tried it. Kinda afraid of something that stays inside the body but quits working after a week or a month. It is like walking on red lava rocks with square wooden pegs thrown down just to keep you off guard. Mine goes from my toes to my heels. Good luck! Most people don't understand why we can't walk and stand properly especially at a young age.
