I have considered SWAT, Police, Secret Service, Spec Ops, and others. Let me know which one I should join. Not to be cocky but I qualifiy for all of them. I just can't decide. I like military, but, SWAT sounds good because you get to go home almost every night. You see some of the problems?? Let me know what you think. Feel free to suggest jobs that I have not listed up here.

You just can't join any local police force and expect to be a member of a SWAT team or a SPECIAL OPS team. You'll have to start out like every other law enforcement person at the bottom of the pecking order, prove your worth on patrol then wait for an opening. When an opening comes you'll be competing with many others for the coveted slot. The same applies to police detective, etc.

With the Secret Service or the FBI you can go in heads first and be put out in the field almost right away. The trick here is that is is a hell of a lot harder to make it through their training program.

I was Army CID, then a Federal Air Marshall, then a private eye so I have a fairly good idea of the process.

There are a few exceptions, of course. A degree in one of the criminal sciences will certainly open the door for you in specialized slot openings. If you don't have that degree you can forget about the FBI, the DEA or the Secret Service.

You have to already be an officer for a certain period of time to be SWAT, Spec Ops Is Military.
To Get A Job As A Policeman Or Deputy, Just Go to the department or sheriffs office and apply. They usually hire then train you. I Started at a county sheriff's office and then went through my acadamy shortly after.

As a 29 year Officer, I agree with DOCTOR WATSON above, you just don't walk into any Agency expecting to get the top jobs. Most Officers work their way up through Rank and promotions to do so. Understand I think it's great to have those high expectations
, but it just doesn't usally go that way. It would be good to have some law enforcement background before you apply to a Federal Agency, but there is a age restriction you will have to beat. Good Luck.

you cant just join swat, you have to be an officer for awhile on a department before getting on swat. secret service is harder to get into than just a normal police force. if you want to bust down doors, then the best choice is the military and you can go overseas and bust down possible terrorists doors.

Have you considered the Federal Prison System? They start you out at a good pay rate, you work great hours, and the benefits are excellent. Another thing to consider would be either Homeland Security, TSA, or the U.S. Coast Guard.

California Highway Patrol is hiring just about anybody who can stand upright and breathe without an oxygen mask. You can live anywhere within the state and be home every night, provided some rapper doesn't kill you because you harshed his crack smoking. Do a search...

There is so many different fields you can go into. I suggest that you obtain a couple of degrees and go from there.. I'm sure that the field you choose will be just a stepping stone to where you will end up.
Good Luck!
