Where did the name "the pound" come from when refering to the SPCA and/or Humane Society?

just a guess: short for 'impound'?

long before they were SPCA or the Humane society things were not so nice for the critters.

meat shops used to be very lax about fillers and there were fewer laws in those days. they made a better profit cheaper by "the pound" and even if the times changed the nickname didn't

They call it the pound because it a jail for animals !!!!!! they keep them in cages rows and rows of them, and keep them on display until some nice person buys them and give them a home. otherwise they are put to their death similar to our jail/prison system
