depends on what the cause is but most of the time it's fleas or mange. Either one is best resolved with a dip...it's a medicated bath to kill the parasites that live on your dog. If it's fleas then any time your dog goes outside in the grass he's going to get more so after the dip try a flea collar. if it's the mange then it's a mite that's your problem, they are like tiny spider like parasites living in the fur of your dog and are easily passes from dog to people/ or dog to dog. You've heard of scabes? Same thing. after the dip keep strange dog contact to a minimum and always wash your hands after petting your dog.
Take a trip to the vet to make sure it's not another problem...and for the dip.

Read your dog food label, what is the first ingredient? Should be meat! Corn can be a problem for a lot of dogs.
If you have ruled out fleas and allergies, then read this about the vaccinations that your dog has had. These links are to Wisconsin University

As far as Benadryl goes, it must be given by weight. Here's a site with the dosage by weight. This is a tempory fix only.

You need to find the reason. It could be food allergies. If you buy your dog food from a regular store such as ralphs, vons it is probably the by products in it. A lot of dogs are allergic to chicken by products.. Try switching your dog food to natures reciepe available at petco's , petsmart it more expensive but well worth it. If that doesn't work take your dog to the vet, also check to see if your dog has ear mites, if you see dark waxy build up in your dogs ears, and they smell could be mites and possible ear infection....

I have a chihuahua that is allergic to some grasses. My vet recommended Benadryl for him. for his size which is around 7 lbs he recommended an 1/8 tsp. Vet also recommended oatmeal baths as well. I also would make sure there is no fleas or ticks on your dog and frontline plus or advantix works great.

Some dogs have skin irretations that can't keep them from itching. also some have flea infestations that require you to go to the vet. to get medication to help the poor dog with it's allergy . I had a golden retriever who had a skin allergy due to the dander on her skin. the vet gave her medication and it helped her.

I would say to just shave your dog, give it a bath, and when the hair grows back and if it is still itching... go to the vet.

Is it dry skin or flees? If it's dry skin, my vet suggested giving my dog a teaspoon of canola oil a day to help produce natural skin oils and alleviate dry skin. If it's flees, you need to get some flee and tick medication.
