that is so wild, i really dont have a scientific reason for doing this, but what i do know, is from expierience...i too scratch alot...i hate it...i have asked my docter, read medical books...and then taken medical test, because severe itching can be a sign of certain medical problems...but i have a thyroid problem (over active) which actually has nothing to do with my itching...i cannot, my docter (and he is not the first i have asked about this...don't really know why i too scratch...but i have been doing that for awhile, but also i cannot stand bumps, spinas(which we call thorns to remain in my skin...in other words i have to pick...in away i can be manic about it...i hate it...it drives me crazy...i do not know why i do it...but my arms are scared now..and really is not very attractive.) the docter says i do alot of my damage at night...while i sleep...but it has kind-of become a habit at this point. first think hard if there are any other symptoms that occur with the itching...how long have you been doing this... if there are no other symptoms, possible you have an allergy? or have you changed soaps, lotions, colongne...anything different you were doing before your craving to itch started? are you on any med's that might be causing you to itch...if you think it out...you may be able to fiquere out the answer yourself. maybe you are a nervous person, some have twiches, some scratch. there could be so many answers to your question....please first exclude a medical problem...by checking with a docter...if that is not the answer..think harder...maybe talk to a physcologist...i am not saying anything is wrong with you...but it is another avenue to travel...when all else fails. i hate when i do this...i just cant seem to stop picking or scratching till i bleed...i now can only hope to out grow it, although i am 44 and really became serious with this new addiction about a year ago. there are so many things you can do....anti-itch cream, docters, deep thought, basically keeping a diary of when you do it and what you are feeling at the time, what you have eaten....so many things can cause manic (my own word) itching. you can control your actions...i am not saying it is easy...but i slowly am controling it...since i believe in my case i just let it become a habit..now because i think first what i am doing to my skin...i most of the time ,not always, can stop before i go to far...of course this was after talking with medical docters first and realizing it was not a symptom of a larger picture...i did not answer you i wish i could of...but...you may find comfort in knowing someone else was involved in the same behavior, and is slowly getting it under control. such a wierd thing it is...but your not alone...good-luck...think hard...delete what's not and fiquere out what possible is.

Take a hot blow dryer and it should relieve it a bit and put on some hydrocortizone. Don't scratch too much because you'll be introducing germs into your wounds which can cause an infection then gangreen then you'd loose a limb. SO CONTROL YOURSELF!

Are you scratching because you are itchy, or just picking your skin? If it's the latter; look up compulsive skin picking (csp) - it's a form of obsessive compulsive disorder, and needs to stop. Other people do it too, so don't worry. Me included!

It sounds like you need some anti itch cream like asap so try some cortizone or better yet go see your doctor to find out what is making you itch so bad that you make yourself bleed.
