Maverick, a 3-year old pit bull, was severely injured May 29 while fending off a stray dog who was trying to attack Brown's mother. Maverick belongs to Brown's daughter, Anna Emmons, and his act of bravery has left the family both proud and sad all at once. According to Brown, her mother was taking Maverick out early that morning. She said Maverick immediately started growliing and that was when her mother saw the stray coming toward her. Maverick took charge of the situation at once. "Mama said it was just like he put his body in front of her... That other dog was shaking him (Maverick) like a rag doll, but he wouldn't stop," Brown explained. She said the dog did everything in his power to keep the stray away from her mother. By the time Brown got outside and realized what was happening, the stray dog ran off. "Maverick came back in the house and was breathing really heavy and then went to his water bowl and collapsed. Then we knew something was definately wrong," she noted. They rushed the dog to an animal urgent care center in Fayetteville where they were told they would have to pay the entire bill before they would treat the dog, who at the time, was in extreme pain due to his injuries. Brown said she and her daughter were appalled at the fact that the urgent care wouldn't treat the dog or accept anything but an upfront payment. In the end, a friend of the family had to take money out of his savings account in order for them to begin treatment on the dog. Maverick was eventually put in to the care of the East Fayettevile Veterinary Clinic and Dr. John Lauby. Dr. Lauby informed Brown and her daughter that one of Mavericks legs had been severely broken and would have to be amputated. "There was practically no other way of dealing with it." Brown said. " I get emotional because he had to pay that kind of price for a stray dog that somebody probably threw out." "The vet said pit bulls will fight to the death and that's what he did. He risked his life for my mom's. He wasn't going to stop," Brown added. Emmons, tears streaming down her face, said Maverick is a lovable dog. "He's like a big puppy. He's a big lap dog." Brown says her mother feels guilty because Maverick was hurt, but Brown said she is grateful to the dog for saving her mother's life. Maverick came through his surgery well and is now recovering at home with his family. Brown said they are lucky the dog was there to fight off the attack, because if it had gotten her mother or her granddaughter, the outcome could have been much more grim. Brown remarked, "This dog wouldn't give up. He really deserves a medal." -written by Nikki Willis -printed June 6 2004 in THE SAMPSON INDEPENDENT, Clinton, North Carolina

http://www.pbrc.net/misc/PBRCHeros.pdf#search='pit%20bull%20search%20and%20rescue' - top seizure dog for US customs, SAR dogs, a pit bull who saved a child from a rattlesnake bite and more

In the search for Lacy Peterson it was a pitbull used in the search. The same dog searched for remains when the last space shuttle went down. Another pit works for the Washington State Patrol. They and others are at http://www.workingpitbull.com/activities.htm - notice the Schutzhund trained ones...many would say it' the pit aggression but to do that they must also CALL OFF.

They work as explosive and narc dogs.
http://www.lawdogsusa.org/otherdogs.html scroll down to "Popsicle" - and also note that many of these dogs are rescues - some would have been put down due to breed bans. An ironic twist that they now work looking for explosives and putting their lives on the line to protect people
