Here's the reference from which most people conclude that mastrubation is wrong:
http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?book_id=1&chapter=38&version=31&context=chapter
They draw an analogy between what Onan did (ejaculating without the intent of procreation) and mastrubation (which is just that). However, some scholars believe that God put Onan to death because he did not fulfill his responsibility to his late brother's wife (in spite of being told to do so by God himself). There are also other parts of the Bible that suggest that semen causes things to become impure, like this one:
http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Leviticus%2015:17
As far as I know, the Christian restriction on mastrubation is a recommendation inferred from the Bible. The case against mastrubation is not totally clear, but there's enough room for doubt as to its acceptability. I hope this answers your question!

What Does the Bible Say?
A youth asked: “Is masturbation an unforgivable sin?” Masturbation is not mentioned at all in the Bible. The practice was common in the Greek-speaking world during Bible times, and several Greek words were used to describe the practice. But not one of these words is used in the Bible.
Since masturbation is not directly condemned in the Bible, does this mean it is harmless? Absolutely not! Though it is not classed with such gross sins as fornication, masturbation is surely an unclean habit. (Ephesians 4:19) The principles of God’s Word thus indicate that you “benefit yourself” by strongly resisting this unclean habit.—Isaiah 48:17.
No physical illness, however, has been proved by modern medical research to have been caused by masturbation. Add researchers William Masters and Virginia Johnson: “There is no established medical evidence that masturbation, regardless of frequency, leads to mental illness.”

This is ONE interpretation of the Story of Onan.
As was the custom in those days, if a married man died without having offspring, then it was the duty of his closest male relative to impregnate the widow, in order for her to have a sort of "proxy" child for her late husband.
Onan's sister-in-law's husband died, so Onan was supposed to knock her up. Instead, the Bible writes that Onan "spilled his seed on the ground." This can be interpreted in a number of ways, Some people say that he masturbated. Others say that he practiced contraception by using the withdrawal method. In either case, God was displeased and killed him for the sin of what came to be called "Onanism"--another name for masturbation. (Frankly, the way that *I* read that passage, I think that he withdrew, not wanked.)

it doesn't, it says spilling seed is sacred, therefore it is only a sin if a man does it, so go masturbate away. The reason it says this is because a brother failed to provide his family an heir, he pulled out right before ejaculation so his seed was "spilt upon the ground." So it is not necessarily masturbating.

The Bible is silent on this subject. If you want to read an in depth article discussing what the Bible actually says go to this link.

Oh I'd have to look. And I don't exactly follow the Bible anyway, but I did find that particular passage once. It was rather vague. It was something like one prophet was commanded to impregnate this one woman, but he refused and was killed, and another guy refused and was killed... Like I said, I vaguely remember. But you could interpret as God doesn't want you to masturbate or you could interpret as God really wanted this one woman pregnant for some reason.
Either way it's all BS to me. I'm honestly suprised I own a Bible myself.

Nowhere to be found in the bible. Masturbation is subjective.

It states that it is better to plant your seed in the belly of a whore that to loose it on the ground....back in those days Isarel was a small group of people and the plan was for them to become a great nation...thus reproduction no matter how it happened...seed was important and valuable in the eyes of God...and just as important today...if you want to multiply.

Conserning the "sin" of Onan as other's have spoke of... the sin was not in spilling his seed weather he jacked off or pulled out. The sin was in not bringing up seed unto his brother as God had told him to. So the sin was that he disobeyed God, not that he jacked off.
