I need to have dental work done that i have put off for 10 years because the shots with the epinephrine cause rapid, pounding heartbeat for about 20 minutes straight that made my heart hurt painfully. I have been told I could get a shot without the epinephrine but that it would cause too much pain and too much bleeding. The dentist decided not to work on me. What are my options now? Has anyone had this kind of problem?

Epinephrine is not needed...but sure helps. The anesthesia (numbing) will be shorter (15-30 minutes)without it. Also, for surgeries involving incision, not just regular extraction, the bleeding can be problematic.
For upper teeth, I suggest rtying with epinephrine once. For the lower teeth, try it one more time, but mention it to your dentist so he can inject slowly and make sure he is not inside a blood vessel. It doesn't mean you won't fell it (some people are more sensitive to it), but there is much less chance of it happening.

polocaine or mepivicaine don't have epi. i use them on heart patients. epi is placed in anesthetic as a vasoconstrictor. when you constrict the blood vessels the body is not able to wash out the anesthetic as quickly thereby increasing working time. without it you just get feeling back quicker. and maybe not quite as numb. you can still get epi for upper teeth. i'm sure it's the lower nerve block that caused your trouble. there's a huge blood vessel back there and if you deposit the anesthetic into the blood stream...well i don't have to tell you the rest.
