GARLIC is an excellent repellent. I've bathed kittens in lemon and/or lime juice when they were too young for flea treatment. It seemed to work.
However, once the animal is old enough (8 weeks) I recommend using Advantage. It's not cheap, but it doesn't contain the same chemicals found in flea collars and shampoos in pet stores. Advantix is great for dogs because it also works as a repellant.
Brewers Yeast is a vitamin supplement found in most pet stores. It contains garlic and I've known people who have used that successfully for flea control for some time. It depends on where you live too. If you live in a heavily wooded area, you may need something stronger (Advantage).

cats are different from dogs, and what's ok for dogs could kill a cat. same with people meds, aspirin, etc., never give anything like that to a cat.
the best thing for fleas is not flea collars. most vets recommend Frontline.
the "holistic" stuff or over the counter stuff bought in pet stores really doesn't work.
ask your vet what to use and save your cat from possible allergies and diseases carried by fleas. the sooner the better too, because your house could become infested, meaning you would need to treat your home too. poisonous and expensive!
good luck~

I never tried it on the animal itself. But years ago I got rid of fleas in my carpet by using diatomaceous earth. It's used in filtering swimming pools. It's made up of tiny little skeletons of diatoms, and looks like dust. It's messy, but works and doesn't hurt anything. The skeletons are sharp and actually breaks the backs of the fleas and kills them. But it's too small to hurt people and full grown pets, as far as I know. It sure didn't hurt my dog any. Leave it in the carpet for a little while- creates a lot of dust- then vacuum in a day or two.

I add vinegar to the water in their pet dishes. About 2-3 tablespoons in a good size bowl of water. The vet said it was fine and so far no fleas.

I put a little garlic in their food and put peppermint extract mixed w/water in a spray bottle & spray them weekly. They are outside & I haven't seen a flea or tick on 1 since I started using the spray.
