preferably by its name and in a non threating manner such as an excited yelpish. or teach him that u'r grr voice means he's in trouble but don't associate words u use on a daily basis as a mean sounding word or else the dog will fear u and may not completely trust u

The whistle where you have 2 fingers in each side of your mouth works, pat your leg also, after the whistle,Or just say 'come on boy'), and pat your leg at the same time, till he gets use to the "come on boy" or both..
These have both worked for me - when training a new puppy..
