Depression is a serious mental illness and you can't just "snap out of it" as some people think. But you can, to a certian extent, control other factors such as environment and the release of certian hormones.

Right off the bat I would say for you to exercise but you stated that you do not exercise. Not only does exercise induce the release of a class of hormones called endorphins which are natural anti-depressants, exercise and movement also aid in brain activity and focus through the vestibular system in the brain.

It is hard to focus enough to study without being depressed. Depression alone can make you feel groggy, achy, and overall just weak...but I'm wondering...what are the side effects of the medication that you are taking?

Through researching the brain I know that there are ways to help a person focus when trying to study. It all has to do with our sensitivities to light, colors, temperature, movement or clutter, sounds, and smells.

Have you ever heard of a technique that people use to find their own perfect environment to study. It could be at the park on a nice day; at the library where it is very quiet; at Starbucks, Barnes and Nobles, etc. where there are people all around you; at home at your uncluttered desk facing the wall with no other visual or audio stimulis but your books; or at home with the music on so that your mind can unconciously drown out the noise to focus on reading. The lights could be bright or dim, the temperature cool or warm.

It all depends on your preference, so do some experimentation on your study environment and find out what works best for you!

P.S. Studies have prooven that water and protein improove brain activity and function; so eat some nuts and drink plain ole water when you study so that you can better retain the info. Hope this helps you!

Read a book or learn something new. Something that you have always wanted to get your hands on. Also try reading phsycology books to understand more why you are going through depression.

With your history of depresssion, it would be pretty easy for u could probably convince ur doctor to give you a perscription for a adderall. The stuff will give u energy and make u focus. if not ur doc, go to ur local college campus

you answered your own question - exercise is the universal anti-depressant. It won't cure you, but it will help you feel better long enough to get stuff done.

Slowly but sure is OK, what you have to do is solve your depression first. Then you can study properly.

hullo
depression impedes studying via poor concentration, you should be treated first in a proper way, drugs are not the whole story you know.

As a fellow depressee of about 8+ yrs., please, please take answers from the general public with a grain of salt and keep close to your doctor, and trusted friends. A journal can be very beneficial.
