being a somewhat shy person, I think I have some answers, from my own personal experience.

I'm shy because sometimes I feel like I might get shot down. Like I might feel shy about voicing an opinion because I don't want to be made fun of. So I either a) refrain from sharing, or b) share, but with a slightly red face and a beating pulse.

So yeah, it's probably just fear ... fear of rejection, of looking stupid or out of place. I guess people that aren't so shy just ignore the fear, or don't really care about it anymore.

Shy people just have more inhibitions than less shy types

My personal experience is that as a kid my sister was always in the spot light and praised for what she did. I stood in the back and watched. I'm used to and feel more comfortable still doing so.

i dont know, i am the shyest person i know.... i guess it could be the way you were brought up by your parents (overprotectiveness), or fear of rejection, or just social phobia.... fear of critcism from others... fear of unacceptance... stuff like that. i hate being shy =P

Criticism from childhood. Not enough praise, not enough attention, or not enough encouragement, ridicule, laughing when you try to do something and screw up.
