he is going to judge the dead and the alive that are not believers, why would he judge the saints? those that his son died for? many people think that the judgment is for everyone, it isn't.
as for the believers we will have our works judged, and get a reward for those things we did, or loss of reward for things we didn't do and should have. now with that being said...
OK, the Bible says that the dead and the alive that are going to be judged their souls are going to be judged, the soul never dies. the body does but the soul continues to live.
there is also no such thing as soul sleep, the Bible says that "absent from the body, is present with the Lord" that is immediate!

He means the literal dead. And they are not "waiting in their grave" for 2000 years. It will be like a blink of an eye to them as will the rapture of the living believers.

Yes, He means exactly like that. Some are waiting in paradise (those that accepted Jesus) and in hell (those that rejected him) and when Christ returns the judgement will come where everyone will give account to every deed done. Ghost are deceiving spirits/evil spirits, they are the ones being use to scare small children.

The dead are "asleep in Christ", and when Jesus returns, will be lifted up first, followed by the living. There are none in Heaven, nor hell, now, but rather waiting in death. Hope that makes sense.

I dont think anyone is truly "dead in spirit"....This is why we have ghosts around who don"t (or don't want to) realize that they are dead and need to go home to heaven.....When Christ returns it will be a great day......All of the spirits who are lost will be taken home.............

I believe He is talking about those Christians who have died physically. He will raise them first and then those believers still living will rise up after them and we will be judged in heaven.

The Bible means the literal dead.
That said, don't hold your breath. 2000 years is a hell of a long time to just be waiting around to return.
