No, its a bad reason. Gothics are no longer considered unusual, but are rather main stream. Maybe he is looking for acceptance, or trying to figure out what he really wants to follow, or just piss people off. You'd have to ask him more about it to know for sure.

Some do it to stand out and I can see where it works for them if they don't go way into just the dark aspects. There is a mysterious air and interresting things about it if you check it out. Most of the gothic types I know are highly intelligent, inquisitive and fairly quiet. If you can't speak out verbally why not use other ways? Most hide from their dark half instead of looking into it and I don't mean evil. We all have two sides; angry and joyful, sad and happy, constructive and the need to tear down. If we face our darkness and integrate it into our life in a constructive way, it is actually very healthy. This is what I have been told and I'm sure there is much more and different ideas.

his answer is kinda good, but most goths dont want to stick out. most people know me as a goth and i chose to be gothic because its different, some peopel like skaters and other goths will start talking to you and other people like preps jocks and peopel like that will stay away from you, i was off and on depressed and just for someother reasons. if your friend wants to be gothic just to stick out then thats awsome, but if he is seriously thinking about becoming satanic i would just make sure that he does not get "To" carried away like cuting the wrists and stuff like that.

Not sure what you're getting at about sticking it out, but gothic doesnt really have very much meaning anymore. Its a mainstream fad, just something to make money. Chances are, whoever "he" is, will grow tired of it.

that could be a good reason or it may be because of what they believe, or they may be going through something in life and they think that is the best thing to do is become a goth. Hope I helped

It's a vain image. Vanity can sometimes intice people to take on an image, and then apathy seems to rule people who are not o.k with just being themselves for themselves.

to better express yourself, but hey, that same "goth" person could spend less time trying to "rebel" and look the way they do, then YOU trying to make yourself look normal.
