people get there chromosomes from their parents when conception occur. males have xy while females have xx. so the gender of the person is determined by the chromosome from the father.

Its a matched set. The father has an XY pair, the mother a XX pair, and so when the exchange takes place a pair will be kept, XY and you're a guy, XX and you're a girl. But there are some accidents where things don't clear so well and you get stuff like XXY, which can result in ambiguous features, but that is rare.

The child gets one chromosome from each parent. Female(mother) has XX and male(father) has XY. Since the mother can only always donate an X chromosome, the child's gender is dependent on which male chromosome is donated.
