I find it pretty depressing that no matter what people can't see any sort of view point other than their own. Instead of realizing where someone else is coming from, people choose to demean whatever it is that they don't agree with and act like only what they think can be right. Any opinions?

Well, some people can be tolerant, so it is possible. As to why others are so very intolerant, my own theory is that the more shaky their beliefs, the more they defend them. That is, if you are not sure what you believe in is true, and you need to believe it (because you are afraid of hell, for example), then you get all neurotic and can't accept the idea that other people believe other things without being all afraid of going to hell.

See, if you were taught about heaven and hell as a child, and then you decide later that it is nonsense, a part of you (the irrational, little-kid part) thinks "Well, what if it is true? Then I will go to hell for not having believed."

The whole thing is a major mind-manipulation, and totally unfair. Which is, as much as anything, why I don't believe it. No God worth worshiping would be so unjust!

I think that it was the way they were brought up whereby they were taught to believe in their own opinions and the way of thinking.

It could also be that they may have a superiority complex where they cannot accept other peoples' point of view and feel that they are superior to others which in actual truth, hide their inferiority of a lesser knowledge by putting down or slandering others' opinions and therefore are oblivious that there are better opinions out there than their own.

I once saw a car that had several bumper stickers on it. One said "teach tolerance." Another said "hatred is not a family value." There were a few more along the same theme, of tolerance, respect, inclusiveness, etc. Then to the side there was a "Darwin Fish." An ornament designed to be a blatent mockery of a religious symbol cherished by a great many people.

It goes to show that we can be totally blind to our own prejudices.

Very true. This is done by Catholics, protestants, Jewish people, atheists, and liberals. We should all try to understand where the other guy is comming from. But once we know, and we have facts that disprove his ideas, we are under no compulsion to shut up in the name of "tolerance" to make him feel good. That is why we have free speech, the free marketplace of ideas, to test ideas and remove the scams. That is why I am confident in christianity, it has withstood the worst assaults through the ages and is still strong. It is based on fact.

Actually, only the monothiestic religions (christianity, islam..ect) teach that they are the center of the universe and everyone elses beliefs are crap. Every piece of pagan lore that I have ever read has taught that all gods are the same, so its only logical to respect the religions and beliefs of everyone.

Its too bad that most people prefer an elitist attitude.

It takes a while to discuss things like adults, I just went to a talk on non-violent communication, it was quite interesting as it teaches you how to have empathy.

Also, there were many teachers there, so maybe the next generations growing up will be more tolerant

The idea that there is One True faith in the universe is a notion promulgated by those who oppress themselves with deep seated fear, preventing them from questioning the validity of beliefs that have provided illusory comfort in what they perceive to be an unsafe world, fraught with unsettling and abundant unknowns, most notably, that of death itself. Unmoved to change, such individuals will remain confined in the prison of their predictable fears and will never become heroic seekers of The Divine. They will often, in fact, become hindrances to mystical heroes, because, by heroic example, true seekers constantly remind the fearful, consciously or not, that theirs are lives of well-rationalized self-deceit and cowardice, not actual faith and courageous wisdom. It is a sad but true fact throughout human history that the fearful resent heroes for so obviously showing them what they are not, and the result has been our world’s witch burnings, crucifixions and so on.

Hope and faith are to openness what judgment and fear are to closedness.

Perception is humanity’s worst problem. People perceive thing differently and everyone thinks they have the right perception. Sadly, perception can be manipulated which society always does. If people were to come up with one perception for things, we'd be fine. But they will always want to sway you.

People seem to believe that allowing others opinions to exist, they in some way agree with them.
