I always let the mother wean them. She is the ultimate deciding factor as to when it happens. As long as she is still willing to allow them to nurse, let them.

I usually start offering them food after about three or four weeks. Take dry dog food and add hot water. Let it sit until all of the food is soft and still warm (about 20 minutes). When they are all laying around passed out, remove the food and throw it out. Don't try to reheat it and serve it to them again, unless you want some sick pups.

Don't stop them from nursing. They get antibodies from the mother's milk, which will keep them safer from disease. Also, the milk is designed specifically for them.

While the mother is still nursing, I give her all that she'll eat. But I don't overfeed my bitches until after they've had the pups. About two weeks before she's due, I'll increase her food by about 15 or 20%. fat dogs tend to have problems come delivery time.

Feed a high quality dog food. A DRY dog food. Canned dog food is crap. It is mostly water, and lacks the nutritional value of the good dry foods.

Between 4-5 weeks. The puppies should be starting to get teeth & mom won't be to happy about feeding them.

Start out making a grool out of kibble and either warm water or a puppy replacement formula like Espilac. Let the kibble soak up the moisture so it's soft & mooshy.
