Like the one person says, hair only grows a certain amount over a specified period of time. However, I believe African American hair that is properly moisturized and generally well cared for stays long and does not break as easily. The problem with our hair is not that it doesn't grow, it just breaks for one reason or another (generally speaking, though there are some people whose hair truly will not grow). I think chemicals are hard on hair. I wear relaxed hair, but I keep it braided up and I wear weave. It is pretty long under the weave! I keep it moisturized and "out of the way" of heating appliance, dyes and abuse. I can fry and dye the weave hair at will!
Also, another note...a friend of mine has never had relaxed or chemically treated hair. She has only had her hair pressed on a weekly basis. Her hair is down to the center of her back and it looks amazing! Everyone always assumes it is weaved hair, but it is all hers. AND she is not of mixed race. Both her parents are black.
Hope that helps...I don't know if there is a totally correct answer to your question. But, if there is...I wanna know too!

Hair grows about one fourth inch a month. If you are african american, you could straighten your hair, then it would look longer

BioSil
It tastes horrible (extremely extremely horrible), but it's an all natural supplement that encourages the growth of hair and nails
I bought it at some all-natural health store, but it's available on-line as well:

use mane 'n tail products dont over process your hair. too many chemicals will cause breakage. try to stay away of the too tight braids, that cause your hairline to move back, or balding around the temples and side areas. keep the ends clip.
