I have read that when people have panic attacks that they want to run away from the particular situation they are in. But when I have these weird episodes(I guess panic attacks) I start shaking and hyperventilating and I brake out into a bad sweat. But I don't have the need to run away. After a few minutes, I start to calm down. But right before everyime that happens to me, I think Im dying. I think something bad is happeneing, that I have a weird disease or Im having a heart attack or somethig. Am I having a panic attack?

It sounds like a panic attack to me, and I've learned about them. Here's how you can tell for sure: Are you afraid of something? Is there something you don't want to do? Are you in a situation you don't want to be in? Then it's a panic attack. If you cannot connect it to any thoughts, then it must be something else, and you should see a doctor. But if it is the panic attack, YOU are the cause. The good news is, YOU are also the cure. Being afraid of the panic attack will only make you panic more, making your panic attack worse. It's a vicious cycle. But you will NOT die, go insane, or lose control from a panic attack. Here are 6 steps to help.

1. ACCEPT that you are anxious about something.
2. Give yourself PERMISSION to feel anxious (it's okay!)
3. BREATHE. Slowly.
4. TALK to yourself. Tell yourself that the panic attack won't hurt you and that it will pass.
5. DISTRACT yourself. If you're not focusing on your anxiety, you wond be in a state of panic.
6. LET TIME PASS. Try to see the humor. Also, try to figure out what's causing your anxiety. Are you stressed out or afraid of something?

Panic Attacks are part of the body's fight, flight or freeze system of defense. Your body wants to freeze. Panic overwhelms you and you begin to hyperventilate, have heart palpitations, and sweat. This is a stress reaction. Hyperventiallation can be helped by breathing into a paper bag. Lying or sitting down and focusing on deep, slow and steady breathing will bring your symptoms under control. You need to talk with your doctor about this problem. Some medication or behavior modification techniques can help.

I had panic attacks for several years. After alot of research I finally realized these attacks were not going to kill me. They are annoying and embarrassing but all you have to do to stop them is remember it will pass in a few minutes. The more afraided you are the worst it will be. Stay calm and it will soon pass. The more you do this the less attacks you will have.

That totally sounds like a panic attack. It is exactly what I had. I kept going to emergency thinking I was dying but it was just a case of anxiety. Go to your Dr and they can help you find a therapist and possibly some meds to help you out. It's a mental disease and it can be treated with some help from your Dr.

Yes. That sounds like a panic attack to me. I've had them all my life, it seems. Out of nowhere - I, too, start to feel shakey, sweaty, my heart begins to race, and, yep, I feel like I'm about to die. Sometimes, I want to run away, and when I realize that that's not an option, the attack can get worse! It's absolutely horrible. Anyone who's not had such an attack, is so very fortunate.

I was told that I had a panic attack. The only symptom I had was a slight breathing problem - I was under the impression that I had inhaled some pesticide I was spraying in my garden!! I guess the extremity of the attack and exact symptoms vary.......

Yes, or an anxiety attack. Go see your doc before you pass out in public or collapse and hurt yourself.
